Janine helps overwhelmed caregivers stop running on empty and start feeling like themselves again—with more energy, ease, and joy. Her work is deeply personal as she herself stepped into the role of primary caregiver when both of her parents were diagnosed with neurological disorders just months apart. While meaningful, she quickly became overwhelmed—and like so many caregivers, found herself at the bottom of her own to-do list. Through it all, Janine discovered simple, realistic strategies that actually work in real life. Now, she shares her tools with others in a way that’s compassionate, practical, and free of judgment—because caregivers need support, not more pressure. Janine’s a proud mom of two adult kids, a devoted daughter, and still walking the caregiving path herself. She lives in Calgary, AB, Canada, near the foothills of the Rocky Mountains.
I didn’t choose to be a caregiver but the role came to me when my mom was diagnosed with Dementia and my Dad with Parkinson’s within months of each other. At that time, I had to make the very difficult decision to leave a job I loved, truly my dream job, in order to care for my mom and dad. The amount of stress that I was under in trying to care for my parents and manage my own life was so exhausting and overwhelming that I had nothing left to care for myself.
My rock bottom came after a sleepless night during which I was called to my parents’ side, followed by a day full of commitments, appointments and responsibilities. It was then that I realized I was literally holding my breath and had been for months. I forced myself to take a breath, and then another, and another. I realized I was literally on the point of collapse if I didn’t find a way to care for myself. I remembered the “oxygen mask” analogy—in an airplane if the masks come down, put your own mask on first so that you are able to help others. Not only did I not have my oxygen mask on, it was nowhere in sight!
It took me time, but slowly I realized there were things I could do for myself with minimal time commitment and maximum impact. I started experimenting with ways to destress and regulate my nervous system. I also worked on developing stronger boundaries, clarifying my values, and finding effective ways to manage my time so that I was no longer at the end of my own “to do” list.
Now, I am clear on my values and what I need in order to support myself and continue to care for others. I regularly put my self care as a priority in my day. I do this without feeling torn, because I know that what I am doing is ultimately going to allow me to help those I love and care for.
